ChertLüdde ha inaugurato la sua prima stagione con la collettiva An ear, severed, listens, con lavori di Patrizio di Massimo, Horst Antes, Kasia Fudakowski, Emma Hart, Rodrigo Hernández, Hannah James, Zora Mann, Vanessa Safavi, Petrit Halilaj e Alvaro Urbano, con opere di artisti rappresentati da tempo insieme ad altri con cui la galleria inizierà a lavorare nei prossimi mesi. In attesa della loro partecipazione a Miart 2017 nella sezione Generations, con una presentazione di Ruth Wolf-Rehfeldt, abbiamo fatto alcune domande ai galleristi Jennifer Chert e Florian Lüdde.

ATP: Com’è nata la vostra collaborazione?

Jennifer: Io e Florian siamo amici da parecchio tempo e lui ha sempre seguito con entusiasmo il programma della galleria, le mostre e gli artisti. Siamo arrivati a un momento in cui io volevo fare un salto in una certa direzione e lui aveva voglia di iniziare qualcosa di suo. Parlando ci siamo resi conto che questa decisione era quella giusta da prendere. Direi che é stato un processo molto naturale.

Florian: Sono sempre stato un grande “fan” della galleria. Durante gli anni ho seguito con costanza la maggior parte degli artisti – in particolare Alejandro Almanza Pereda, Kasia Fudakowski, Petrit Halilaj, David Horvitz e Ruth Wolf-Rehfeldt – e ho avuto l’opportunità di conoscerli più approfonditamente. Queste le basi su cui si è fondata la nostra successiva e più diretta collaborazione.

ATP: Quando avete deciso di dare avvio alla ‘nuova’ galleria ChertLüdde? Quali sono le motivazioni?

J: La decisione è stata presa dopo la seconda metà dello scorso anno. Da parte mia c’era sicuramente la volontà di accrescere il potenziale della galleria grazie al coinvolgimento di una persona estremamente affidabile, appassionata, ricca di esperienze e motivazione, con la quale condividere un progetto da portare avanti insieme.

F: Ero piuttosto interessato a lavorare con artisti appartenenti alla mia generazione e mi sono sempre sentito ispirato dal programma di Chert. Dopo aver lavorato con Esther Schipper per sette anni ho pensato di poter portare la mia esperienza in un contesto diverso e l’idea di questa collaborazione é stata per me fin da subito molto stimolante. 

ATP: Quali sono le sostanziali novità rispetto agli anni scorsi?

J: Il 2016 è stato un anno davvero intenso. Abbiamo cambiato spazio dopo 8 anni e siamo stati impegnati in un grosso progetto insieme all’artista berlinese Ruth Wolf-Rehfeldt, che ha comportato l’archiviazione di tutta la sua produzione, seguita dalla pubblicazione di un catalogo monografico e la presentazione dei lavori – molti mai visti prima – ad Art Basel Feature 2016. Anche il 2017 sembra seguire gli stessi ritmi dell’anno scorso, con un calendario già ricco di mostre, fiere, esposizioni in strutture istituzionali per i nostri artisti… Non ci saranno cambiamenti sostanziali quanto piuttosto una naturale crescita della galleria e ciò include ovviamente delle nuove collaborazioni con artisti che verranno rese note nel corso dei prossimi mesi.

F: Ruth Wolf-Rehfeldt é un’artista tedesca nata nel 1932 e coinvolta nel movimento della Mail Art durante la DDR. Presenteremo il suo lavoro anche al prossimo Miart nella sezione Generations. Proprio com accennava Jennifer, il 2017 ci vedrà impegnati in grosse produzioni come la Biennale di Venezia, Documenta, Art Basel e una mostra in un’importante istituzione americana di cui daremo notizia nelle prossime settimane.

ATP: La galleria ha iniziato a collaborare con nuovi artisti, alcuni dei quali presenti in importanti mostre. Me li introducete brevemente?

J/F: Abbiamo iniziato a collaborare con Alvaro Urbano, un artista spagnolo con cui avevamo già presentato dei progetti in passato e con il quale abbiamo sempre lavorato a stretto contatto grazie alla sua pratica artistica condivisa con Petrit Halilaj, uno dei primi artisti a essere rappresentati dalla galleria fin dalla sua nascita. Alvaro tornerà da Los Angeles dove sta per ultimare la residenze al MAK, ed é in programma la sua personale per l’autunno 2017, oltre che a una presentazione (sempre con un solo show) ad ART-O-RAMA alla fine dell’estate. Il suo lavoro sarà inoltre in mostra al CAB di Bruxelles in aprile.

Inoltre a settembre avremo la mostra personale di Rodrigo Hernández. Rodrigo è un artista messicano che abbiamo invitato a prendere parte a una mostra collettiva l’anno scorso. Un suo lavoro è presente anche nella mostra che abbiamo attualmente in galleria. 

ATP: La ‘nuova’ galleria ha esordito con una collettiva? Ha un significato particolare?

J: Sì, è stato un modo per noi per presentare nuovi artisti ma anche per mostrare le intenzioni e la direzione artistica che prenderemo in futuro. Una gioia particolare é la presenza di un lavoro di Horst Antes, artista tedesco nato nel 1936 a Heppenheim. L’opera presentata é un dipinto che racchiude lo stile e la pratica di Antes, dal titolo “Kopfstilleben mit Relieftapete (für H.H.)”, del 1969 – 1971.

F: La mostra é stato anche un modo per dare un assaggio del nostro 2017. Petrit Halilaj, ad esempio, ha da poco inaugurato una mostra alla Fondazione Merz (essendo tra i finalisti del Premio Mario Merz 2017) e a maggio prenderà parte alla Biennale di Venezia. Per il Gallery Weekend abbiamo in programma la mostra personale di Kasia Fudakowski (che al momento é in residenza a Villa Romana) e stiamo lavorando con lei anche per la realizzazione delle opere che porterà al Made in Germany Three. A giugno saremo ad Art Basel Statements con Zora Mann, mentre a luglio la galleria ospiterà la personale di Vanessa Safavi. La mostra che stiamo presentando ora (An ear, severed, listens aperta fino all’8 aprile) include alcuni artisti che non fanno parte del nostro programma ma che ammiriamo profondamente. 

ChertLüdde, Berlin – Interview with the gallerists

An ear, severed, listens is the first exhibition of ChertLüdde – formerly Chert, Berlin – with works by Patrizio di Massimo, Horst Antes, Kasia Fudakowski, Emma Hart, Rodrigo Hernández, Hannah James, Zora Mann, Vanessa Safavi, Petrit Halilaj and Alvaro Urbano. The gallery changed its name following the partnership of the former owner, Jennifer Chert, and Florian Lüdde. We met the gallerists to talk about this new collaboration and their projects for the future, including their participation in Miart 2017 (Generations Section) with a solo presentation of German artist Ruth Wolf-Rehfeldt.

ATP: How is born the idea of your collaboration?

Jennifer: Me and Florian have been friends for a very long time and he has always followed quite closely the exhibitions’ program of the gallery and the artists. I have reached a point where I wanted to make a step forward with the gallery and he was willing to start something on his own. It just came a time when we both probably felt a change in this direction would be beneficial for everyone and the right decision to take. It came quite natural.

Florian: I had been a long-standing fan of the gallery. Over the years I had followed most of the artists – especially Alejandro Almanza Pereda, Kasia Fudakowski, Petrit Halilaj, David Horvitz and Ruth Wolf-Rehfeldt – and I had got to know closely some of them. This was the base to get further involved. 

ATP: When and why did you decide to start off this “new” gallery, ChertLüdde?

J: The actual decision came about in the second half of 2016. From my point of view, the main reason was to increase the gallery potential by acquiring a trustful and passionate, experienced and motivated person into this project and bring it on together. 

F: I was interested in working with artists of my generation and very much inspired by the program of Chert. After having worked with Esther Schipper for seven years I felt I could bring what I had learnt there to this new collaboration – and that was exciting.

ATP: What is going to be different compared to the past years?

J: 2016 has been already a very intense year. We changed space after 8 years and engaged in a big project with the Berlin artist Ruth Wolf-Rehfeldt archiving all her works for a big presentation at Art Basel and producing a Catalogue Raisonne. 2017 already looks like a full calendar of exhibitions, fairs, institutional exhibitions of our artist… there is no substantial change, more of a natural growth of the gallery, also including new artistic positions which will be announced in the course of the next months.

F: Ruth Wolf-Rehfeldt is a German artist born in 1932, involved in the Mail Art movement during the GDR. We are presenting her work also on occasion of the upcoming edition of Miart. As Jenny said, 2017 sees us very involved in some large productions – Venice Biennale, Documenta, Art Basel and an important museum exhibition in the United States that will be made public in a few weeks.

ATP: The gallery has started to work with new artists, some of whom are taking part in important exhibitions. Could you briefly introduce them to me?

J/F: We started to collaborate with Alvaro Urbano, a Spanish artist with whom we already presented projects in the past and we worked closely also thanks to his collaborative practice with Petrit Halilaj, who was one of the very first artist to be represented by the gallery. Alvaro is currently in Los Angeles attending the MAK residency, and will soon be back in Europe, where he will have a solo presentation with us at ART-O-RAMA and will take part in an international institutional exhibition in April at CAB, Brussels. In September the gallery will host the solo exhibition of Rodrigo Hernández. Rodrigo is a Mexican artist who we had invited to a group exhibition last year. His work is also presented in our current show at the gallery.

ATP: How come you have decided to have a group exhibition as the first show as ChertLüdde? Does this choice have a particular meaning?

J: Yes, it was a way to present new positions and what we are aiming to develop in the future, along with the artistic direction we want to take. The presence of an historical work by Horst Antes – a German artist born in 1936 in Heppenheim – is a special joy for us. The piece we have in the show it is a painting “Kopfstilleben mit Relieftapete (für H.H.)”, 1969 – 1971.

F: The exhibition gave us the chance to give a preview of what we are working on this year. For example Petrit Halilaj just opened an exhibition at the Fondazione Merz and he will be part of the Venice Biennale. We will present a solo show with Kasia Fudakowski during the Gallery Weekend Berlin and we are working closely with her on her contribution to “Made in Germany Three”. We are participating at Art Basel Statements with Zora Mann. Vanessa Safavi will have a solo exhibition with the gallery in July, while the ones by Rodrigo Hernandez and Alvaro Urbano will be in the second half of the year. The current exhibition also includes artists who are not part of the program, but who we truly cherish.
