Limone space opened in London the Sunday 8th of May, with its first show Rosina#0. Limone is an artist run space led by Michela de Mattei and Diego Miguel Mirabella. The two Italian artists invited 7 artists to work and show in their studio/house space of Rosina street: Johann Arens, Marco Emmanuele, Ludovica Gioscia, Christian Newby, Jaimini Patel, Ruaidhri Ryan and Willem Weismann. The show will last 3 until the 27 of May.

ATP: Why did you decide to open Limone? What are its main characteristics?

Michela de Mattei and Diego Miguel Mirabella: Limone is a house. And beyond a house it is also our studio, where we moved last year when we arrived in London. It is a huge industrial space, which is rare for London and which we found through a very efficient system: the Live in guardians. These companies protect empty properties which are waiting to be demolished or rehabilitated, leasing them to “guardians” who legally occupy them. It is actually a sort of anti-squat.  Obviously when we entered in the space, it was a total disaster. We built and painted walls, created new rooms and set everything in place. In the end the true secret is always painting the floor grey. We opened as an artist run space to share the luck of having this space with other artists, and in order to make contact with the London art scene in a practical way. We put together what we like, considering the consequences and learning from them. Briefly, we wanted a centre and we decided to build our own. When we first thought about Limone we imagined a long table, one of those yellow checkered tablecloths with lots of people around and of course, the art works.

ATP: How come you decided to choose this particular name?

MdM / DMM: Limone is a lemon tree which for obvious weather conditions we had to leave in Italy . We felt its/his lack .

ATP: What are your programs for the next months?

MdM / DMM:  We are not a gallery with a real and proper program. We try to converge in Limone the over-enthusiasm that springs from our artistic practice. We have many projects for the next months, but we need to take our time to research in order to avoid turning enthusiasms into tantrums. As we did for the first show, Rosina#0, which opened on the 8thof May, we want to take the time to allow each other and the artists involved to get used to the idea of showing in a space that is not a clean gallery space but which is already polluted by our objects and daily living. And it has been really interesting to see how the 7 artists that we invited interacted and changed our space, imposing their works above the functional settlement of each thing.

ATP: Beside the exhibition, will the space be open also to other events?

MdM / DMM: Yes, definitely!

Apre un nuovo spazio a Londra: LIMONE 

Lo scorso 8 marzo è stata inaugurata Rosina#0, la prima mostra da Limone, l’artist run space fondato da Michela de Mattei e Diego Miguel Mirabella. I due artisti Italiani, residenti a Londra da più di un anno, ospitano 7 artisti invitandoli a lavorare ed esporre nel loro studio/casa di Rosina street (da qui il nome dell’esperinza numero 0). Fli artisti invitati sono Johann Arens, Marco Emmanuele, Ludovica Gioscia, Christian Newby, Jaimini Patel, Ruaidhri Ryan e Willem Weismann. La mostra rimarrà aperta fino al 27 maggio su appuntamento.

Alcune domande ai fondatori di Limone.

ATP: Perché avete deciso di aprire Limone? Quali sono le sue caratteristiche?

Michela de Mattei / Diego Miguel Mirabella: Limone è una casa. Oltre ad essere casa è il nostro studio nel quale ci siamo trasferiti un anno fa appena arrivati a Londra. Uno spazio industriale molto grande, cosa rara per questa città, che abbiamo trovato grazie a un sistema molto efficiente i Live in Guardian, grandi spazi per lo più industriali che in attesa di essere riqualificati o demoliti vengono affittati a dei guardian (noi) che li occupano legalmente. Insomma una sorta di anti-squat. Chiaramente quando un anno fa siamo entrati dentro lo spazio era un disastro, abbiamo costruito e dipinto muri, creato nuove stanze e arredato l’ambiente ma in fondo il segreto è sempre dipingere il pavimento di grigio. Abbiamo aperto per condividere con altre persone il lavoro e la fortuna di questo nostro spazio e in una modalità pratica entrare in contatto con la realtà artistica di Londra, mettere insieme le cose che ci piacciono e verificarne gli effetti, imparare da quelli. Detto in breve cercare un centro o meglio costruirlo. Quando abbiamo pensato Limone abbiamo immaginato un grande tavolo, una di quelle tovaglie gialle a quadri e tante persone intorno e naturalmente,  le opere.

ATP: Come mai questo nome?

MdM / DMM: Limone è un albero di limone che per ovvie condizioni meteorologiche abbiamo dovuto lasciare in Italia. Ne sentivamo la mancanza.

ATP: Che progetti futuri avete in programma per i prossimi mesi?

MdM / DMM: Non siamo una galleria con un vero e proprio programma. Cerchiamo di far convergere dentro Limone l’eccesso di entusiasmo che scaturisce dal nostro lavoro d’artisti. Abbiamo diversi progetti per i prossimi mesi ma abbiamo deciso di prenderci dei tempi di ricerca per non trasformare gli entusiasmi in capricci. Come per la prima mostra Rosina#0, inaugurata l’8 maggio scorso, vorremmo consentire a noi il tempo per accordarci e agli artisti coinvolti il tempo per abituarsi all’idea di mostrare il loro lavoro in un ambiente che, a differenza dello spazio dedicato della galleria, già “inquinato” dal nostro vissuto e quotidiano. Ed è stato davvero interessante vedere come i 7 artisti invitati hanno interagito e cambiato il nostro spazio, imponendo i loro lavori al di sopra della disposizione funzionale di ogni cosa.

ATP: Oltre alle mostre temporanee, ci saranno anche altre iniziative?

MdM / DMM: Assolutamente si!
