Nato nel 1970, Apichatpong Weerasethakul si è laureato in architettura all’Università di Khon Kaen e ha conseguito un master in cinema allo School of the Art Institute di Chicago, fino a diventare oggi una delle voci più originali del panorama cinematografico contemporaneo. I suoi cinque lungometraggi, i corti e le videoinstallazioni gli hanno portato riconoscimenti internazionali e premi in numerosi festival, culminando nella Palma d’oro a Cannes nel 2010 per Lo zio Boonmee che si ricorda le vite precedenti (Lung Boonmee Raluek Chat). Il suo precedente lungometraggio Syndromes and a Century (Sang Sattawat, 2006), è stato designato uno dei migliori film dell’ultimo decennio in diversi sondaggi del 2010. Apichatpong Weerasethakul ha inoltre allestito esposizioni in numerosi paesi dal 1998, e presenterà quest’anno un’importante installazione per la Documenta di Kassel. Fra i suoi lavori più recenti, un film online per Mubi (Ashes, 2012) e uno per il Walker Art Center negli Stati Uniti (Three Wonders of the World, 2012). Il regista tornerà a Cannes quest’anno con Mekong Hotel, presentato come proiezione speciale, e attualmente sta lavorando a un progetto incentrato sul fiume Mekong, al confine fra la Thailandia e il Laos.

Born in 1970, Apichatpong Weerasethakul has a degree in architecture from the University of Khon Kaen and a master’s degree in film from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, to become today one of the most original voices in contemporary film scene. His five, feature films, his short films and his video installations have brought him international recognition and awards at numerous festivals, which was culminated at Cannes with the Palme d’Or, in 2010 for The Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives (Lung Boonmee Raluek Chat). His previous feature film, Syndromes and a Century (Sang Sattawat, 2006), has been nominated as one of the best films of the last decade, in various polls in 2010. Apichatpong Weerasethakul has also exhibited in many countries since 1998, and this year will present a major installation at Documenta in Kassel. Among his most recent works, an online movie for Mubi (Ashes, 2012) and another for the Walker Art Center in the United States (Three Wonders of the World, 2012). The director will return to Cannes this year, with Mekong Hotel, presented at a special screening, and he is currently working on a project focusing on the Mekong River on the border between Thailand and Laos.
