Il Castello di Rivoli presenta al pubblico la prima rassegna museale italiana dedicata all’artista tedesco Thomas Schütte. La mostra – allestita in stretta collaborazione con l’artista – è curata da Andrea Bellini, condirettore del Castello di Rivoli e Dieter Schwarz, direttore del Kunstmuseum Winterthur. Co-prodotta dal Museo e dal NMNM Nouveau Musée National de Monaco, la mostra di Torino è il primo di due eventi dedicati alla figura dello storico artista tedesco, il cui lavoro sarà presentato – dal 7 luglio all’ 11 novembre – anche presso il NMNM del Principato di Monaco. Negli spazi di Villa Paloma il progetto curatoriale si concentra sulla serie dei modelli architettonici delle One Man Houses, accompagnate da un gruppo di opere recentissime ed inedite che trattano diversi temi cari all’artista, come i bunker ed i templi. La mostra al Castello di Rivoli prende invece in considerazione la serie delle Frauen, straordinarie figure di donne i cui corpi vengono sottoposti a deformazioni spaziali e organiche. Ciò che emerge con forza da questo gruppo di opere è la capacità di Schütte di operare una vera e propria rivoluzione formale e immaginativa, non solo rispetto alla nobile tradizione della scultura figurativa occidentale ma anche nell’ambito della sua stessa opera. Le Frauen in bronzo o alluminio derivano direttamente da alcuni modelli in ceramica scelti tra 120 diversi bozzetti realizzati tra il 1997 ed il 1999. Per la prima volta in assoluto le diciotto Frauen verranno presentate tutte insieme nei suggestivi spazi della Manica Lunga, l’antica Pinacoteca sabauda del Settecento, larga 6 metri e lunga 147. Le Frauen saranno accompagnate dalla serie completa dei loro bozzetti in ceramica e da cento acquerelli provenienti dalla collezione privata dell’artista. Al Castello di Rivoli l’artista presenta inoltre due inedite sculture in bronzo alte quattro metri, United Enemies, che saluteranno il visitatore fronteggiandosi suggestivamente davanti all’ingresso del Castello settecentesco.
In occasione delle mostre saranno pubblicati da Richter Verlag due cataloghi, Frauen e One Man Houses, accompagnati dai saggi critici dei due curatori, Andrea Bellini e Dieter Schwarz.

Castello di Rivoli presents to the public the first museum exhibition in Italy devoted to the German artist Thomas Schutte. The exhibition – set up in collaboration with the artist – is curated by Andrea Bellini, co-director of Castello di Rivoli and Dieter Schwarz, director of the Kunstmuseum Winterthur. Co-produced by the Museum and the Nouveau Musee National de Monaco (NMNM), the show held in Turin is the first of the two events dedicated to the historical figure of the German artist. His work will be presented – from 7th July to 11th November – also at the NMNM of the Principality of Monaco. At Villa Paloma the curatorial project is focused on a series of architectural models of, the so called, One Man Houses, which is accompanied by a group of recent and unpublished works that deal with various themes, very dear to the artist, such as bunkers and temples. On the other hand, the exhibition at Castello di Rivoli takes into account the number of women (Frauen), some extraordinary figures of women whose bodies are subjected to deformation, spatially and organically. What emerges from this group of works, is the ability of Schutte to make a real breakthrough; formal, as well as imaginative, not only with respect to the noble tradition of Western sculpture, but also within his own work. The women (Frauen) in bronze or aluminum models are produced directly from a ceramic cast and are selected among 120 different sketches made between 1997 and 1999. For the first time ever, the eighteen women (Frauen) will be presented all together in the prominent spaces of the Manica Lunga, the old Art Gallery of the 18thcentury, measuring 6 meters wide and 147meters long. The women (Frauen) will be accompanied by the complete set of their models in ceramic and 100 watercolor drawings from the artist’s private collection. At Castello di Rivoli, the artist also presents two unusual, four-meter high, bronze sculptures, entitled United Enemies, which greet the visitor, standing prominently in front of the eighteenth-century castle.
On the occasion of the exhibition, two catalogs will be published by Richter Verlag; “Women” and “One Man Houses”, accompanied by critical essays from the curators Andrea Bellini and Dieter Schwarz.
