Un viaggio geografico fatto di spostamenti e cambiamenti fa emergere l’estetica street dei lavori di Gerasimos Floratos, artista greco americano cresciuto a New York. La linea tracciabile tra il suo studio di Londra e il café della nonna a Cefalonia, trasformato anch’esso in spazio di lavoro, ha portato all’interno di Armada tre sculture e tre dipinti freschi di produzione capaci di comunicare la sua storia.
Le tele realizzate negli ultimi sei mesi nell’isola greca mostrano strutture organiche afflosciate e ricurve, ambigui ibridi che ricordano dei pets e uno spazio di esplorazione della psicologia dei corpi. Anche i colori così accesi e frenetici, luminosi grazie alla pittura ad olio, evocano meccanismi frettolosi di una New York senza sosta. La tela appesa e quasi fluttuante al centro dello spazio espositivo, presenta sul retro una storia aneddottica di piccole fotografie appartenenti all’artista mentre due leggere sculture in polistirene, dipinte a mano con acrilici e basate sul principio del levare, presentano corpi amputati.
Un esempio è International Soft Body (2017) in cui riusciamo ad individuare un busto di un corpo e delle gambe iper compresse. Una scultura dalle dimensioni decisamente minori rispetto alle precedenti posa su un basamento di metallo costruito nello spazio espositivo con dei rottami recuperati e riutilizzati. Le due forme di un giallo acceso, icona di quei taxi di cui Times Square è ricolma, appaiono intrappolate in un reticolato di corde che riprende la decorazione della scultura Town Square Alignament (2017). Lo stile grottesco, a metà tra umorismo e una prospettiva tetra, fa degli informi soggetti della vita urbana della grande metropoli esseri carichi di energia, rumorosi come i loro corpi. Pensando ad un sottofondo musicale da attribuire ai lavori sarebbe sicuramente una commistione tra hip-hop e reggae.
Un ecosistema di figure ricche di stratificazioni, a metà tra il figurativo e l’astrazione, fa di Soft Bone Journey un quadro site-specific ed espressionista di un’immagine crocevia del mondo al pari della piazza newyorkese dove, come delle trottole, valanghe di turisti, artisti da strada in costume, mendicanti e commercianti si alternano in una danza febbrile.

A first generation Greek American and native New Yorker, Gerasimos Floratos’ paintings and sculptures play with the idea of site specificity and the notion of what it means to be ‘rooted’ in a single place. His works employ pyscho-figurative bodies as mechanisms for charting space in many forms; psychogeography of the globalised world, societies or microcosms built through commonalities of practice, and the internal space of the mind. For the artist, the slouchy alter egos present throughout his work operate as sites for exploring the relationship between the material and psychological bodies. The coded visual language present throughout his practice is partnered with a unique lexicon from which he draws titles for the works and exhibitions.
Within the space hang three large scale oil paintings from the artist’s grandmother’s café-turned-studio on the Greek island of Kefalonia. One of the paintings has been installed free hanging in the middle of the space with photographs attached to the backside. In combination, three new hand carved and painted sculptures from the Floratos’ London studio are presented. A smaller scale piece sits on a plinth constructed from scrap metal found in Armada’s courtyard. This is the first time the artist will exhibit sculpture and photographs alongside paintings.
