DAMA can be defined as an extension of Artissima, though characterized as a more intimate moment where time dilates, allowing us to expand and deepen the content of the fair through the recovery of the intimacy of relationships and, moreover, thanks to a particular focus at the research evaluation of each individual artist. DAMA wants so to increase the dialogue between contemporary art and the city of Turin in order to allow the encounter between the past and the city’s tradition with the contemporary, finding new solutions of continuity to “start afresh from the center and extend its potential for the future”. It is therefore not casual the decision to use the eighteenth century Palazzo Saluzzo Paesana as location for the fair. The historic building returns, in fact, to be the protagonist of the cultural life of the city setting aside the now obvious choice of industrial buildings or the classic white cube. The goal that brings together Giorgio Galotti, Domenico De Chirico and Lorenzo Balbi is to host the works in the historical rooms of the palazzo to enable an elaborate creative process involving the gallery, the artist and the curator.

A few weeks ago we published the interview with Giorgio Galotti, creator of the project. Now we offer you an interview with Domenico De Chirico, emerging curator who selected the ten galleries who will be attending to DAMA. De Chirico is undoubtedly a curator capable of interpreting contemporary reality, as he has repeatedly distinguished himself for its ability to be close to the artists needs and, above all, because he demonstrated capable of interpreting a generation and a precise historical moment.

Simona Squadrito: By what criteria have the galleries for DAMA been selected? Do they share some specific features?

Domenico De Chirico: The underlying criterion was to import international youthful energy, almost entirely new in the Italian fair sector. DAMA is an independent project, characterized by a distinct curatorial identity: the selection of the galleries was mainly oriented by issues of professional respect or existing interrelationships as well as the particular attention given to certain young artists who will be the undisputed protagonists on the stage of the Palazzo Saluzzo Paesana.

SS: The historic building where DAMA is taking place is undoubtedly a rather unusual container, considering also the galleries need to make immediately obvious their own identity. Will each gallery be given a clearly divided space or will you try to create a more unified ensamle, a seamlessly path?

D.D.C: With its 560 square meters, Palazzo Saluzzo Paesana will be hosting DAMA with ten emerging galleries with different backgrounds, which will present one or two artists depending on the size of the allocated space. In view of the elaborate process and the different stages of implementation that DAMA required, some of the works that will be exhibited have been created ad hoc, in the reception of the aesthetic and technical needs of the space.

SS: The choice of Invisible Cities by Italo Calvino, as a reference for DAMA brings to the mind a city that seemingly contains many possibilities and more obviously in this case, many “interiors.” What is that brought you to choose this concept?

DDC: During the design phase, first there was the combinatorial device of Calvino: “… in which each short text lies next to another in a sequence that does not imply a a consequentiality or hierarchy but a network within which you can draw multiple paths and derive multiple and ramified conclusions. In Invisible Cities every concept and value reveals itself twofold: even what is exact. ” (in Italian in the original text; excerpt from Italo Calvino, Lezioni Americane, Milano, Mondadori, 2010, pp. 80–81)

SS: By joining together all these points it seems odd to me that we still speak of a fair … It rather seems a sophisticated exhibition that invites us to a reflective pause in a moment when many events are concentrated in Turin. Do you see yourselves trying to formulate a sort of declaration of intent, a way to pursue in order to renew the framework of the fair?

D.D.C: DAMA aims to be a stimulating conjunction that opens to a close dialogue between the elegance of Turin’s heritage and the aesthetic codes of contemporary art.
