È stata lanciata la call per partecipare a Feature Expanded. European Art Film Strategies, la terza edizione del progetto dedicato ad artisti visivi che vogliano realizzare il loro primo lungometraggio. Il tutto è diretto da Leonardo Bigazzi e Sarah Perks e sostenuto dal programma Creative Europe/MEDIA, con la partecipazione di Lo schermo dell’arte Film Festival e HOME.
Il programma è diviso in due fasi. La prima si svolgerà con una residenza dal 21 al 26 giugno a Manchester in cui ci saranno corsi, workshop, masterclass, proiezioni e tavole rotonde a cura di professionisti del settore cinematografico, quali i produttori Lisa Maria Russo, Leif Magne Tangen e Jacqui Davies.
La seconda fase invece avrà luogo a Firenze dal 15 al 19 novembre, in corrispondenza con la decima edizione dello Schermo dell’arte Film Festival, in cui gli artisti avranno l’occasione di presentare i loro lavori ad una giuria internazionale di professionisti del settore.
Tra i due momenti gli artisti verranno seguiti online da tutor nei mesi di luglio, agosto, settembre e ottobre.
Alla fine di questo percorso sono previsti anche tre premi:
– Distribution Award: garanzia di distribuzione del film vincitore nel Regno Unito e in Italia rispettivamente tramite HOME e Schermo dell’arte
– Development Award: che sostiene la co-produzione e lo sviluppo della sceneggiatura
– ottod’Ame Film Award: premio in denaro per sostenere la ricerca intorno al progetto dell’artista vincitore.
Le prime due edizioni hanno visto partecipare artisti come Yael Bartana, Marine Hugonnier, Alexandre Singh, Stefanos Tsivopoulos, e gli italiani Francesco Bertocco e Cristina Picchi. Tra gli ospiti internazionali del progetto si ricordano Joana Hadjithomas, la produttrice francese Elisa Larrière, il direttore delle esposizioni dell’Eye Museum Jaap Guldemond, la ricercatrice e docente di cinema Erika Balsom. Feature Expanded ha anche favorito collaborazioni tra i professionisti partecipanti: da ricordare è l’invito dal Cinemart dell’International Film Festival Rotterdam del progetto “Kindness” dell’artista greco Stefanos Tsivopoulos, vincitore del Development Award dell’edizione 2016.

Fino al 3 marzo è possibile inviare le richieste di partecipazione, tra le quali saranno selezionati i 12 partecipanti dell’edizione 2017.

Who can apply?
Feature Expanded is open to visual artists who are developing their first feature film project intended for theatrical distribution.
Participants must have a significant experience of short film production and/or moving image practice.
Number of participants foreseen: 12
Participation fees & Bursaries:
The course fee is €2,500 full price and includes food and accommodation both in Florence and Manchester. Travel costs are not included.
There are five bursaries available:
- Two Feature Expanded full bursaries that cover the course fee and travel to both location
- Two bursaries supported by University of Salford. These bursaries are available to European nationals only
- One bursary offered by the Netherlands Filmfonds to Dutch citizens or residents in the Netherlands (covering 75% of the fee)

Feature Expanded is the first ever training programme designed to support visual artists who want to make a full-length film. The project is developed by Lo schermo dell’arte Film Festival and HOME and directed by Leonardo Bigazzi and Sarah Perks.
Feature Expanded provides a uniquely tailored set of activities responding to the important trend of visual artists pairing new vision and strong innovation with feature film production. This new generation of filmmakers expands the terrain of the traditional audio-visual industry, attracting new audiences, partnerships and structures with a different take on feature film. Across two locations and a six-month duration, this programme is a combination of masterclasses, case studies, workshops, screenings, one-to-one meetings and pitching sessions for directors developing their first feature film. Participants acquire essential new skills and expertise to advance their early stage feature film projects for theatrical distribution and exhibition.
Feature Expanded takes the form of two residential workshops in Manchester and Florence, between these the participants work on project development, respond to set tasks and use online consultancy on the specific topics. After this, participants are directed to collaborations with relevant festivals, markets and other partners. Training activity is peer-led by industry experts working currently in this field with several feature film credits. The course covers script development, non-script based production, project pitching, co-commissioning and financing, working with actors and participants, distribution and exhibition involving digital platforms.
