Dal 18 al 22 novembre 2015 Firenze ospiterà l’ottava edizione de Lo Schermo dell’Arte Film Festival, unico festival italiano che dichiaratamente esplora i punti di contatto tra cinema e arte contemporanea. Diretto da Silvia Lucchesi e promosso dalla Regione Toscana e dall’Ente Cassa di Risparmio di Firenze, come di consueto Lo Schermo dell’Arte si presenta con un programma molto ricco e suddiviso in varie sezioni.
Nella sezione Sguardi numerose saranno le proiezioni di film sull’arte contemporanea e sulle personalità artistiche del nostro tempo. Saranno dunque visibili, ad esempio, Peggy Guggenheim: Art Addict, di Lisa Immordino Vreeland, che esplora attraverso immagini d’archivio, interviste e ricostruzione storica l’immenso patrimonio biografico, relazionale e artistico della più grande collezionista del Novecento; Jan Fabre: Beyond The Artist di Giulio Boato, con cui gli spettatori potranno entrare nella factory del performer, regista, coreografo e scultore belga; Frame by Frame di Alexandria Bombach e Mo Scarpelli, che riporta le storie di quattro fotografi afghani che lottano, nel loro paese oppresso dal regime talebano, per la libertà di stampa e di parola; Troublemakers: The Story of Land Art di James Crump, (proiettato di recente alla Fondazione Prada, Milano) che racconta alcuni protagonisti della Land Art, come Robert Smithson, Walter De Maria e Michael Heizer.
Per la sezione Cinema d’artista saranno sugli schermi In Waking Hours di Sarah e Katrien Vanagt, che segue la ricostruzione di una camera oscura casalinga, affascinando adulti e bambini; The Show MAS Go On, di Rä di Martino, che racconta, documentando e ricostruendo cinematograficamente, le alterne vicende dei Magazzini Allo Statuto di Roma e dei suoi frequentatori; Human Mask di Pierre Huyghe, dove l’artista francese, traendo spunto da una storia vera, filma una scimmia intrappolata nella condizione umana impostale da una maschera; Tales of Us di Oliver Pietsch, in cui il regista tedesco esplora il tema dell’amore, in tutte le sue sfaccettature, montando spezzoni di grandi successi del cinema internazionale.
Inoltre saranno proiettati i 4 film realizzati nel 2013–2014 per l’edizione pilota di ArteVisione, progetto di produzione di opere video di giovani artisti italiani emergenti nato dalla collaborazione di careof e Sky Arte. In programma le opere di Yuri Ancarani, che in San Siro esplora il “dietro le quinte” di una partita nel tempio del calcio italiano; Francesco Bertocco con Family Show, che tratteggia un quadro ironico e divertente delle famiglie che accompagnano i figli partecipanti a reality show come X Factor; Giuseppe Fanizza e il suo Spectaculum, che ritrae spettatori “ipnotizzati” dalla magia del cinema; e ZimmerFrei, con il progetto Intervallo, che svela la quotidianità degli intervalli pubblicitari negli studi televisivi per i lavoratori dello spettacolo.
La sezione Focus On è dedicata quest’anno ad Harun Farocki, recentemente scomparso, a cui anche la Biennale di Venezia 2015 ha dedicato un’ampia retrospettiva. L’artista tedesco, grande interprete del cinema e del video d’autore dagli anni ’60, ha sempre rivolto il suo interesse alla storia, la violenza, l’oppressione e la costrizione di cui le immagini sono veicolo e interpreti. Rigoroso e metodico, deciso a restituire con la precisione delle immagini e della struttura le idee registiche, Farocki ha sempre instillato nei propri lavori una goccia di rivoluzione, restituendo agli spettatori la crudezza della realtà e la forza dell’immaginazione. A Lo Schermo dell’Arte sarà Antje Ehmann, moglie e collaboratrice dell’artista, a presentare una delle sue ultime video-installazioni in quattro parti, Parallel I – IV, un’attenta riflessione sul peso che la grammatica e la persuasione delle immagini digitali, della realtà virtuale, dei videogiochi e delle simulazioni hanno avuto sul cinema negli ultimi anni. Venerdì 20 novembre, prima della proiezione dei video, in conversazione con Ehmann sarà Erika Balsom, studiosa, ricercatrice e critica cinematografica, oltre che una dei maggiori esperti dell’opera di Farocki.
Occasioni di approfondimento saranno rappresentate poi da talks, proiezioni e incontri con i protagonisti del festival, tra i quali la regista e artista anglo-bengalese Runa Islam, che presenterà anche i suoi cortometraggi Empty the pond to get the fish e Pièce Unique. Giovedì 19 novembre, infatti, la regista presenterà i suoi lavori, per la prima volta in visione in Italia, insieme a Riccardo Venturi, storico dell’arte e ricercatore presso l’INHA di Parigi. L’incontro, ospitato dal Dipartimento SAGAS dell’Università di Firenze, sarà volto all’approfondimento del linguaggio filmico rigoroso e poetico di Runa Islam, tra i protagonisti della scena internazionale delle immagini in movimento, e della sua ricerca costante di analisi dell’atto della visione e delle sue strutture.
Altra novità sarà Feature Expanded, un programma internazionale di formazione cinematografica, che sarà presentato all’interno del festival venerdì 20 novembre durante una tavola rotonda dal titolo Audience Development & Exhibition, il cui scopo sarà quello di approfondire le nuove possibilità di distribuzione e la creazione di nuovo pubblico attraverso l’uso della rete e delle nuove tecnologie. Promosso e organizzato da Lo Schermo dell’Arte Film Festival e da HOME Manchester, sostenuto da Creative Europe MEDIA e diretto da Leonardo Bigazzi e Sarah Perks, Feature Expanded è rivolto ad artisti desiderosi di realizzare il loro primo lungometraggio e si pone l’obiettivo di fornire una panoramica e approfondimenti sul funzionamento del sistema produttivo dell’audiovisivo europeo e del mercato cinematografico. Strutturato in seminari, workshop, proiezioni e incontri, è iniziato a Manchester nel giugno 2015 e prosegue a Firenze durante l’VIII edizione del festival. Gli artisti partecipanti a Feature Expanded, inoltre, presenteranno i propri progetti in una pitch session con esperti internazionali e un gruppo di possibili produttori.
Sarà poi presentato per la prima volta il VISIO Young Talent Acquisition Prize, un premio neo-nato volto all’incentivazione del collezionismo di video installazioni, film e video d’artista. La Seven Gravity Collection, collezione privata italiana interamente dedicata alle opere video di artisti contemporanei, potrà infatti acquisire l’opera di uno degli artisti partecipanti alla mostra VISIO. Next Generation Moving Images, ultima ma non ultima novità di quest’anno. VISIO NEXT, a cura di Leonardo Bigazzi e allestita alla Strozzina – Fondazione Palazzo Strozzi, raccoglierà i lavori di 12 giovani artisti internazionali partecipanti al workshop VISIO – European Programme on Artists’ Moving Images. Focalizzandosi sulla produzione di video e film di una generazione di artisti concentrati sulle moving images, la mostra esplora un panorama eterogeneo e ricco, rappresentato dai partecipanti, provenienti da tutto il mondo e dalle più prestigiose istituzioni accademiche. Protagonisti saranno Rebecca Digne (Marsiglia, 1982), LucFosther Diop (Douala, Camerun, 1980), Alessandro Di Pietro (Messina, 1987), Hoël Duret (Nantes, 1988), Roberto Fassone (Savigliano, 1986), Giorgi Gago Gagoshidze (Kutaisi, Georgia, 1983), Aditya Mandayam (Bangalore, India, 1983), Emilie Pitoiset (Parigi, 1980), Janis Rafa (Grecia, 1984), Anike Joyce Sadiq (Heidelberg, Germania, 1985), Dan Walwin (Frome, Regno Unito, 1986) e Baha Görkem Yalim (Izmir, Turchia, 1987).
In continuità con gli anni passati invece è la collaborazione con Palazzo Grassi – Punta della Dogana e Fondazione Pinault, quest’anno per l’omaggio a Martial Raysse, a cui è dedicata la mostra in corso nella prestigiosa sede veneziana di Palazzo Grassi. Francese, classe 1936, l’artista ha attraversato con la sua produzione eterogenea e cangiante tutto il secondo Novecento, e oltre. All’attività di pittore ha sempre infatti affiancato diverse espressioni artistiche, come quella filmica, prima in pellicola con film sperimentali, e poi in video, attraverso i quali esplora la propria forza creativa e le possibilità del colore e del montaggio. Il 21 novembre l’artista sarà presente al festival e presenterà, insieme a Martin Bethenod, direttore di Palazzo Grassi – Punta della Dogana, sei cortometraggi prodotti dal 1967 al 2005, in cui Raysse esplora le potenzialità filmiche di musica, colore, narrazione, poesia e arte.
Sedi della manifestazione saranno il cinema Odeon, l’Università degli Studi di Firenze e Palazzo Strozzi – Strozzina.

From November 18th to November 22nd, 2015, Florence will be hosting the eighth edition of Lo Schermo dell’Arte Film Festival, the only Italian festival entirely devoted to the exploration of contact points between cinema and contemporary art. Directed by Silvia Lucchesi and promoted by Regione Toscana and Ente Cassa di Risparmio di Firenze, Lo Schermo dell’Arte, as usual, has a very rich program, divided in a number of different sections.
Many will be the shows, included in the Sguardi section, of films on contemporary art and the most influential artistic personalities of our time. There will be the possibility to watch, for example, Peggy Guggenheim: Art Addict, by Lisa Immordino Vreeland, that investigates, through archive images, interviews and historical reconstructions, the enormous biographic, relational and artistic heritage of one the most important art collectors of the XX century; Jan Fabre: Beyond The Artist by Giulio Boato, through which the public could enter into the “factory” of the Belgian performer, director, choreographer and sculptor; Frame by Frame by Alexandria Bombach and Mo Scarpelli, that narrates the histories of four Afghan photographers who are fighting, in their country oppressed by the Taliban regime, for press and speech freedom; Troublemakers: The Story of Land Art by James Crump, that recalls the life and works of some main characters of Land Art, such as Robert Smithson, Walter De Maria and Michael Heizer.
For the Cinema d’artista section, will be on screen In Waking Hours by Sarah and Katrien Vanagt, which follows the construction of a home-made darkroom, bewitching children and adults; The Show MAS Go On, by Rä di Martino, that recalls, documenting and recreating, the difficult life of the Magazzini Allo Statuto in Rome and its customers; Human Mask by Pierre Huyghe, where the French artist, inspired by a real event, shoots a monkey trapped in the human condition laid down to it because of a mask; Tales of Us by Oliver Pietsch, where the German director explores the topic of love, seen from every point of view, editing different parts of old success of international cinema.
Furthermore, four of the films realized in 2013-2014 for the first edition of ArteVisione, a project created to produce video works of young emerging Italian artists and born from the collaboration between careof and Sky Arte, will be displayed. On the agenda, the works by Yuri Ancarani, that in the film San Siro explores the “behind the scenes” of a match in the temple of Italian football; Francesco Bertocco with Family Show, that outlines an ironic and funny portrait of the families that accompany the sons taking part to reality shows as X Factor; Giuseppe Fanizza and his Spectaculum, which portraits an audience “hypnotised” by the magic of cinema; and ZimmerFrei, with its project Intervallo, that unveils the daily life of show business workers in television studios.
The Focus On is devoted, this year, to Harun Farocki, who has recently passed away and whom also the 2015 Venice Biennale dedicated a vast retrospective. The German artist, one of the most important figure of art cinema and video from the 1960s on, has always addressed his attention on history, violence, oppression and constraint, that images translate and convey. Rigorous and methodical, determined to evoke, through images and structure precision, the director’s ideas, Farocki has always instilled a drop of revolution in his works, rendering for the public the bluntness of reality and strength of imagination. At Lo Schermo dell’Arte Antje Ehmann, wife and collaborator of the artist, will present one of his last video-installation in four parts, Parallel I – IV, a precise consideration on the weight that the grammar and effect of persuasion of digital images, virtual reality, video games and simulations have had on cinema in the last few years. On Friday the 20th of November, before the showing of the videos, Ehmann will have a talk with Erika Balsom, scholar, researcher and cinema critic, and also one of the main experts of Farocki’s work.
Opportunities for in-depth analysis will be talks, shows and meetings with the festival protagonists, among which we find the Anglo-Bengali artist and director Runa Islam, that will present for the first time in Italy her short films Empty the pond to get the fish e Pièce Unique. On Thursday the 19th of November, in fact, the artist will explain her work with Riccardo Venturi, art historian and researcher of the INHA in Paris. The encounter, hosted by the SAGAS Department of the Università di Firenze, will be devoted to the detailed study of the rigorous and poetic language of Runa Islam, who is placing herself among the most prominent figures of the international moving images’ scene, and an analysis of her permanent investigation of the act of seeing and its structures.
Another news will be Feature Expanded, an international film education program, that will be presented on the occasion of the festival on Friday the 20th of November during a workshop titled Audience Development & Exhibition, which aim is to get to know in depth new distribution possibilities and new public creation through the use of the net and new technologies. Promoted and organised by Lo Schermo dell’Arte Film Festival and HOME Manchester, sustained by Creative Europe MEDIA and directed by Leonardo Bigazzi and Sarah Perks, Feature Expanded is addressed to artists wanting to realize their first film, and its goal is to give a possible overview and in-depth analysis on the functioning of the audio-video European production system and of the film market. Organised on seminars, workshops, shows and meetings, it took its start in Manchester in June 2015, and is going to continue during the eighth edition of the festival. The artists taking part in Feature Expanded, moreover, will be presenting their own projects in a pitch session with internationals experts a group of possible producers.
Then, it will be the first edition for the VISIO Young Talent Acquisition Prize, a new-born prize with the aim of sustaining video-installations, films and art videos collecting. The Seven Gravity Collection, an Italian private collection entirely dedicated to video works of contemporary artists, will have the possibility to buy the work of one of the artists participating to the exhibition VISIO. Next Generation Moving Images, last but not least news of this year. VISIO NEXT, curated by Leonardo Bigazzi and displayed at the Strozzina – Fondazione Palazzo Strozzi, is going to show the works of 12 young international artists who took part in the workshop VISIO – European Programme on Artists’ Moving Images. Focusing on the video and film production of a generation of young contemporary artists particularly interested in the use of the moving images, the exhibition explores a heterogeneous and rich landscape, represented by the participants, coming from all over the world and from the most important academic institutions. In continuation of the last years is instead the collaboration with Palazzo Grassi – Punta della Dogana and Pinault Foundation, this year for the homage to Martial Raysse, whom is devoted the current exhibition in the prestigious Venetian seat of Palazzo Grassi. French, born in 1936, the artist has crossed the entire second half of the XX century, and more, with his heterogeneous and changing production. To the activity of painter he has always, in fact, flanked different artistic expressions, such as film, on film for experimental movies before, and video afterwards, through which he analyses his own creative force and the possibilities of colour and editing. On the 21st of November the artist will be presenting, with Martin Bethenod, director of Palazzo Grassi – Punta della Dogana,
six short films produced between 1967 and 2005, where Raysse explores the cinematographic potentialities of music, colour, storytelling, poetry and art.
Seats of the event will be Cinema Odeon, Università degli Studi di Firenze and Palazzo Strozzi – Strozzina.
