There areunconscious aspects of our perception of realityEven when our senses react to real phenomena, sights, and sounds, they are somehow translated from the real of reality into that of the mind. Within the mind they become psychic events whose ultimate nature is unknowable.

Carl Gustav Jung, 1964

DAS INSTITUT is the collective formed by Kerstin Brätsch and Adele Röder in 2007 and, as they define it, it’s more of an ‘alchemist kitchen’ than an institution: the exhibition at the Serpentine Sackler Gallery presents artworks encompassing painting, neon works, slide projections and installations and it juxtaposes the individual artists’ practices creating a new fluid whole. The result is an ethereal and immersive atmosphere, able to let us experiencing a surreal non-verbal language.  Multicoloured shades fade in and out the gallery thanks to the gels added to the skylights; this, together with the spiral path of the exhibition affect the character of the artworks, which gain a new aura through these impalpable elements.

DAS INSTITUT focuses on the transformative properties and effects of light on bodies and spaces; Brätsch uses painting to question the ways in which the body can be expressed – psychologically, physically and socially; in ‘All Ready Maid Betwixt and Between’ (2015) series she mixes materials such as Mylar, antique glass and stones, as long as ‘Unstable Talismanic Rendering’ (2014), a series of marbled paintings invoking visions of the cosmos, the interiority of the body, sex, unknown forces both inside and outside of the human experience. Differently, Röder searches for basic symbolic forms to create a non-verbal language utilising clothing, posture and light to convey human interaction and experience; her works included in the exhibition are the optical slide projections ‘Dark Codex’ (2015) and basic neon shapes entitled ‘Comcorröder Elements’ (2010- 2015). Presented in the same darkened room, these two pieces oscillate from an internal micro view of the body into a macro view of the universe: everything is blurred, nebulous, suggesting multiple interpretations. The same light and body are the motifs of ‘Solar Body Prints’ (2013), a series of sunlight sensitive fabrics, on which appear, transient and ghostly, the artists’ silhouettes.

Situated at the heart of the Serpentine Sackler Gallery, there is ‘Flame Creatures’ (2015), Sergei Tcherepnin’s sound and light installation: a choreographed dance performance which intensively activate Brätsch and Röder’s artworks and give movement and pulse to the exhibition. The spiral path elevate us to a new network of meaning, the one of self and world coming together. DAS INSTITUT surround us with a unique atmosphere linked to the cosmos, and our reaction is spreading a new consciousness and sensibility.
